In Clayton Christensen’s most recent book, Competing Against Luck: The Story of Innovation and Customer Choice, he discusses how we all “hire” products to do a job for us. One example he talks about is how people “hire milkshakes” to do different jobs for them. Sometimes a milkshake is hired as an easy-to-consume snack while driving. Other times a milkshake is hired to placate a youngster. The point he makes is that we must understand the jobs for which our products are being hired.
Here at Campbell Scientific, we are making a concerted effort to better understand the jobs for which our products are being hired. We realize that our products are incredibly flexible, powerful data-acquisition products—that they can be tailored to meet a wide variety of uses and applications.
As we look forward to the future, we realize the importance of continuing to offer the freedom, flexibility, and power of our measurement products. At the same time, we are seeing increased opportunities to optimize measurement solutions for our users, making our products easier to learn, use, and maintain. While the building blocks that we provide today are great, we realize that there are things we can do to optimize or streamline the setup, measurement, analysis, and decision-making parts of the job.
As we work together with you to identify specific jobs to be done and the associated work flows for those jobs, your success in completing your entire job—from beginning to end—is at the top of our priority list. While dataloggers are great, at the end of the day we understand that your job is about making measurements to facilitate better understanding and decision-making. As we broaden our scope, we hope you’ll help us understand where we’re doing well and where our solutions are coming up short.
