Event Description

Campbell Scientific Eddy Covariance Training

This course covers EC applications using the IRGASON, EC150/CSAT3A, and EC155/CSAT3A

The Eddy Covariance Training course covers the proper use of Campbell Scientific equipment in eddy covariance measurements. Basic eddy covariance theory and assumptions used will be noted with respect to proper use and installation of eddy covariance systems.

The training course is taught by Campbell Scientific Support Engineers. Course size is limited to ensure personalized instruction and assistance. "Hands-on" programming exercises and course handouts are used to reinforce the concepts covered by the instructors.

Course fees include a Training Manual and the use of a datalogger, computer, and sensors. Lunch will be provided all course days, and there will be a tour of Campbell Scientific's facilities. A brief course syllabus is listed:

Day 1

Session I: Micrometeorology and Flux Measurement Theory

During this session, an introduction to eddy covariance theory will be covered. This will include general definitions of flux and micrometeorology, descriptions of airflow within the atmospheric boundary layer, introduction to key statistical tools and how they relate to deriving the eddy covariance equation. Additionally, storage and advection will be discussed along with major assumptions made by the eddy covariance technique.

Session II: Instrumentation

During this session, the instructor will build from the eddy covariance theory that was outlined in session one to discuss the measurement principles that are used to observe land atmosphere exchanges of momentum, heat and trace gas. Furthermore, sensor requirements will be discussed and concepts such as frequency response will be defined.

Day 2

Session III: Implementation

Typical eddy covariance instrumentation set-up will be displayed for the class. Discussions during this session will include site selection, tower and instrument placement, sampling frequency considerations, data collection and data retrieval methods. An introduction to network monitoring and post processing software will be covered.

Session IV: Online Data processing and Analysis

Datalogger software will be discussed along with eddy covariance corrections and methodology. Covered corrections include: de-spiking, coordinate rotation, covariance maximization, frequency corrections, SND corrections, and WPL correction. Additionally, QA/QC procedures will be covered: data quality classifications, footprint characteristics and energy balance closure.

Day 3

Session V: Maintenance and troubleshooting

This session will cover general system maintenance along with troubleshooting diagnostic codes. Zero and span procedures will also be discussed along with hands on training.

Session VI: Companion measurements and Factory Tour.

The course will commence with a show-and-tell of additional instrumentation CSI offers that could be used in combination with EC equipment and finally a company tour.
